Five things to do before you buy
- Get pre-approved first. Banks in the region often take 4 to 12 weeks. Know your number before you fall in love with a view.
- Budget for closing costs. They run from about 3% to over 20% of the price depending on the country and whether you are a citizen. Use our property cost calculator.
- Hire a local attorney. In most Caribbean countries the attorney does the title search, which is your protection against boundary and ownership problems.
- Check permits and licences. Foreign buyers may need a land holding licence, central bank or investment board approval.
- Work with a licensed local agent. They know the neighbourhoods, flood zones and fair prices.
